India’s campaign to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has taken a major step forward with an official inspection visit by a Commonwealth Sport delegation to Ahmedabad. The team, led by Darren Hall, Director of Games for the global governing body, will assess the city’s preparedness from August 5 to 7. Their itinerary includes in-depth venue inspections and strategic discussions with top Gujarat government representatives—an essential stage in India’s bid process.

The delegation touched down in New Delhi on Sunday, where they also met with representatives from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). With Canada recently exiting the race, India has emerged as a frontrunner, and this visit to Ahmedabad is considered a crucial part of the evaluation process.

Inspection of Facilities and Infrastructure

Representatives from Commonwealth Sport, formerly known as the Commonwealth Games Federation, will closely examine Ahmedabad’s proposed sports infrastructure and operational readiness. The city was officially proposed in India’s expression of interest to host the 2030 Games.

A source familiar with the plans confirmed that the inspection will start on Tuesday and will include a tour of the city’s sporting facilities and supporting infrastructure.

Discussions with IOA and Gujarat Officials

Prior to the Ahmedabad tour, the delegation initiated early conversations with IOA officials in the capital. It is expected that a larger team from Commonwealth Sport will return later in August for more comprehensive assessments. Gujarat authorities are currently making extensive preparations to demonstrate Ahmedabad’s ability to handle an event of this magnitude.

Bid Submission Deadline Approaches

India is required to submit its final bid by August 31. The final decision on the host nation will be taken during the Commonwealth Sport general assembly scheduled for November in Glasgow.

IOA executive member Harpal Singh noted that the selection process will prioritize factors such as sustainability, ease of regional access, and adaptable hosting plans—areas where India believes it has strong credentials.
