After winning the World Test Championship (WTC) title for the first time, South Africa’s coach Shukri Conrad praised both Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma for their contributions in the historic win.
Conrad said that they got the best batting conditions and acknowledged that chasing 280 was always going to be a tough task. But Markram and Bavuma played really well to guide South Africa home. Conrad said: “We got the best of the batting conditions. 280 was always going to be a stiff task. But the two pros Aiden and Temba stood tall and took us through. I was the one who said Temba shouldn’t bat [after the injury] but the partnership was critical, and they know better than the coaches.”
“I am ecstatic for the guys.” – Conrad
Conrad, who was appointed as the head coach of the South African Test team in 2023, also dedicated this victory to South African fans and expressed how happy he was for the team. Conrad said: “[Emotions] Mine are worse than Kesh. I am ecstatic for the guys. This is for SA. To be able to delivery this is truly special.”
Notably, South Africa’s senior men’s team have now won their first ICC trophy in 27 years. Their last major ICC title came in 1998 when they won the ICC Champions Trophy. In 2024, they reached the ICC T20 World Cup final but lost to India at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown by seven runs. They have also reached the semi-finals of the ICC ODI World Cup several times, most recently in 2023, where they lost to Australia.
