Contrary to popular perception, which has been doing the rounds in the media, there is a concerted effort on the part of the AIFF and Igor Stimac, the national head coach, to work together as closely as possible leading to the India’s matches against Afghanistan later this month.
The AIFF has also sent a letter to the coach expressing its fullest support and assuring him of every backing in his quest to take India to the next round of the World Cup qualifiers. India have never made the third round and it will be historic if it happens.
Confirming that such a letter had been sent, Stimac expressed his commitment to the cause and confirmed that he would be in India starting March 6, to watch some ISL games and then prepare for the away match against Afghanistan.
Much has been said in recent times about the growing differences between Kalyan Chaubey, the AIFF president, and Stimac. While neither want to come on record, there is reason to believe that both have been engaged in efforts to ensure that India puts its best foot forward for the sport. A source in the know of things said, “There was no reason for the AIFF to send the letter to Igor if he was no longer in favour. The letter is clear that the AIFF is throwing its hat behind the coach ahead of the crucial Afghanistan matches. The endeavour is to stay together in making history for Indian football.”
In a recent function in Jaipur, Stimac had repeatedly outlined his determination to lead India to the next round of the World Cup qualifiers. With the president now throwing his weight behind the head coach, it can be said that any or whatever differences there are will be set aside for a larger cause.
