Murafa Akter, Ritu Moni, Nahida Akter and Fahima Khatun struck at regular intervals, as Bangladesh usurped Scotland in the opening game of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah by 15 runs. Sobhana Mostary (36) and Shathi Rani (29) were the key performers for Bangladesh with the bat.

Right from the time Saskia Horley fell to Fahima, Bangladesh seemed to be slightly ahead in the game. Marufa finished with fine figures of 1 for 17 from four overs, while Nahida took 1 for 19. Fahima ended up with 1 for 21. Ritu claimed 2 for 15. She was adjudged Player of the Match.

For Scotland, Sarah Bryce, the wicketkeeper-bat, was the only player who crossed the 20-run mark.  She remained unbeaten on 49 from 52 deliveries, but didn’t get support from the rest. Kathryn Bryce and Alisa Lister scored 11 each. None of the other batters crossed the 10-run mark. Eventually, Scotland ended at 103 for 7.

Earlier, Shathi’s stand of 42 with Sobhana proved to be the difference between the sides. The pair came out to bat with the score reading 26 for 1 and mostly dealt in a diet of singles and twos. Nigar Sultana, the captain and wicketkeeper-bat, was the next highest scorer for the Asian side with a run-a-ball 18.

Once Shathi was dismissed, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals and finished with 118 for the loss of seven wickets. Saskia Horley bagged three wickets. Olivia Bell, Katherine Fraser and Kathryn Bryce took one wicket each.

Scotland will next play the West Indies, while Bangladesh will lock horns against England, one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 118/7 in 20 ovs (Sobhana Mostary 36, Shathi Rani 29, Saskia Horley 3-13) beat Scotland 103/7 (Sarah Bryce 49*, Ritu Moni 2-15) by 15 runs.
