England all-rounder Chris Woakes came to the defense of James Anderson, who has struggled in the Ashes 2023 series. Woakes acknowledged that Anderson’s usual swinging abilities haven’t been as effective this series, but he felt Anderson looked good on Day 1 and deserved better rewards.
Anderson, who was dropped for the third Test, has only managed 4 wickets in three games. “We’ve been so used to Jimmy hooping it round corners and sometimes you just don’t swing the ball as much as you’d like,” Woakes said before the start of second day’s play. “But I actually felt Jimmy looked really good last night and he just hasn’t had the rewards that he has deserved in this series,” he further added.
At lunch on the second day, Australia were at 115/2, trailing by 168 runs, with Woakes and Mark Wood each picking up one wicket for the hosts.
