Veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to an illustrious 17-year journey in the red-ball format of the game.
Mathews made the announcement through a heartfelt message shared on social media on Friday, 23 May.
“My dear friends and family,
With a grateful heart and unforgettable memories, it is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game – international Test cricket. Representing Sri Lanka over the past 17 years has been the greatest honour of my life. Nothing compares to the pride and emotion of wearing the national jersey. I’ve given my all to this game, and it has given me back more than I could ever ask for,” Mathews wrote in his farewell note.
Mathews to play his last Test in Galle
The first Test against Bangladesh in Galle will mark his final appearance in red-ball cricket. However, Mathews confirmed he will still be available for white-ball selection, should Sri Lanka call on his experience and services in limited-overs formats.
“The first Test against Bangladesh will be my final match in whites for my country. While I step away from the Test arena, I remain available for white-ball cricket, depending on the team’s requirements,” he added.
Throughout his Test career, Mathews has been a pillar of the Sri Lankan team — a consistent performer and a respected figure both on and off the field. He has amassed 8167 runs in 118 Tests at an impressive average of 44.62, alongside 33 wickets with his medium pace. He also served as captain in 34 Test matches, guiding the team through several key phases.
