Having recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has revealed he is targeting the upcoming T20 World Cup—set to be held in India and Sri Lanka—as his final international assignment.
Mathews is set to play his farewell Test in Galle against Bangladesh, marking the end of a red-ball career that began at the same venue in 2009. However, the former captain intends to continue in white-ball cricket, with his sights firmly set on contributing to Sri Lanka’s campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
“There are still six months until the next T20 World Cup, and I’ll give it a go depending on how my body responds,” Mathews told reporters on Monday. “My plan is to retire from white-ball cricket after that tournament. If we can win another World Cup, I’d love to play a part in that. So over the next six months, I’ll be working hard on my fitness and skills.”
Reflecting on his career, Mathews expressed pride in his contributions but admitted that poor workload management earlier in his career came at a cost.
“I’m quite content with what I’ve achieved,” he said. “I wasn’t able to bowl much after 2016, mainly because from 2008 to 2015, I played across all formats as a genuine all-rounder. That workload eventually caught up with me. I didn’t manage it well—I was captain and wanted to contribute in every match with the bat, ball, and in the field. Unfortunately, that took a heavy toll on my body. But I have no regrets. I gave everything I had for my country and my team.”
