India pacer Arshdeep Singh has revealed that he has been following Mohammed Siraj’s advice of enjoying the “boring” phases of red-ball cricket in order to succeed in the game’s oldest format, following his success in white-ball cricket.

Over the past few years, Arshdeep has made a name for himself in white-ball cricket and has become an indispensable part of India’s T20I setup. Despite claiming 113 international wickets in 72 matches, Arshdeep is yet to make a mark in red-ball cricket.

Although he has not played many first-class matches since making his India debut, Arshdeep received a Test call-up on the back of his impressive performances in the white-ball formats. The Punjab-based pacer is still learning the nuances of the longest format before making his Test debut.

“In Test cricket, or red-ball cricket, there are times when the day gets boring,” Arshdeep said. “In the session after lunch, the ball often doesn’t do much. So, how can you enjoy that?

“I spoke to [Mohammed] Siraj and he told me that when nothing is happening, how you enjoy that phase will determine how successful you could be in red-ball cricket. He gave me this small tip, and I really liked it.”

Arshdeep last played competitive cricket in IPL 2025, where he finished as Punjab Kings’ highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets in 17 matches. With his county cricket experience and current form, he earned a maiden Test call-up for the England tour. The left-arm pacer was in line to make his debut in the fourth Test, but injured his bowling hand before the match and was subsequently ruled out.

After returning from England, Arshdeep was added to the North Zone squad for the ongoing Duleep Trophy. The 26-year-old is currently in Bengaluru, playing in the prestigious red-ball tournament before flying to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which begins on 9 September.
