South Africa crushed India by a massive margin of 408 runs in the last Test of the two-match rubber in Guwahati to clean sweep the series 2-0. After the defeat, India’s stand-in captain Rishabh Pant said that they need to ‘get better as a team’.
“It’s little disappointing. As a team, we need to get better. We need to give credit to the opposition. We need to take the learning and stick as a team. They dominated the series.
“We needed to be clear with our mindset. In the future, we need to learn from it and get better. They played better cricket, cricket demands that you need to capitalise as a team. And we did not do that and that cost us the whole series. The positive will be focussing in our own plan and that’s what we will take from this series,” said Pant.
South Africa posted a huge score of 489 in the first innings, thanks to Senuran Muthusamy’s century and Marco Jansen’s 93. None of the Indian bowlers were effective. In reply, India got bundled out for 201 and not a single batter could play an innings of note. South Africa did not enforce the follow on despite having a substantial lead. Incidentally, they added 260 more runs in their second innings. Tristan Stubbs missed his hundred by six runs.
While chasing a huge target of 549, India were all out for 140 in the fourth innings. This is the biggest defeat for India in terms of runs in Test matches.
