Former Australia opener David Warner believes that Travis Head can serve as an opener for Australia in Test matches in the future.

Speaking to The Age, Warner said that Australia have lacked a reliable opener for a long time, and Head could now be a strong option in that role after his heroics against England in the first Test of the Ashes 2025 series at Perth Stadium.

“He definitely did think about it and I definitely do think he can do it. The thing is in Australian cricket is we haven’t really had an opener to cement that position. I think he could do that job, and we’ve seen first hand here what he can do.” he said.

Head was brilliant against England in Australia’s second innings as he played a match-winning knock. On a difficult pitch for batters, he scored a breathtaking 123 off 83 balls, hitting 16 fours and four sixes, which took the match away from England’s grasp.

The 31-year-old has opened for Australia in Test matches on nine occasions, scoring 444 runs in nine innings, with his best score being 123.

Warner also believes that Head can deliver consistent runs if he is backed at the opening spot.

“Is he going to be consistent? I think he can be, it’s the match-winning performances that are the ones you’ve got to look at. Then it’s upon the selectors to have the confidence to stick with him and do that.” he added.
