England Test vice-captain Harry Brook has lauded Brendon McCullum as the best coach he has played under, saying that the New Zealander instils so much confidence in his players. Brook has played the majority of his cricket under McCullum ever since making his debut.
The Yorkshireman, who has been a flag-bearer of the Bazball approach, has 3,130 runs to his name in 35 matches at an impressive average of 55.89. He credited McCullum for his success at the highest level.
“I am enjoying playing under Baz and [Ben] Stokes, and it has been a highlight of my career so far. Baz gives you so much confidence; he is the best coach I have ever had,” Brook said while speaking on Test Match Special.
Brook remained unbeaten on 78 off 92 balls at stumps on the opening day of the ongoing Sydney Test. The 26-year-old was happy with the way the pitch has played in a series where runs have been hard to come by for the visitors.
“It is the best pitch in this series, for sure. Australia do not have a spinner and probably thought it would do more than it did. It is generally a good wicket,” he added.
Trailing 1–3 in the series, Brook is optimistic about the prospect of winning the fifth Test and ending the series on a high.
“It would be nice to win this and go home 3–2. We need to stick to our processes this week and work towards modes of dismissal. There is no reason we cannot win this,” Brook added.
England enjoyed their best day with the bat in the series on day one at the SCG, as Brook and Joe Root forged an unbeaten 154-run partnership for the fourth wicket to help England reach 211 for three in 45 overs.
