England head coach Brendon McCullum believes his team is fully prepared for one of the toughest challenges in cricket: facing Australia on their home turf, a task for which they have been preparing for years.
The Ben Stokes-led England side is aiming to secure their first Ashes series win down under since 2010–11.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of the series, McCullum said: “This team has been together for a good couple of years, and we have been building towards this moment.” This reflects his confidence in the group he began shaping in 2022.
During the home series against India, however, they adopted a calmer and more calculated approach, and the series ended in a 2–2 draw earlier this year.
McCullum understands the magnitude of the challenge.
“It is the biggest stage and it is the brightest lights. It is a series that could define teams, the people, and the players within it,” he added.
Australia will be without their captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood for the first Test, as both have been ruled out with injury concerns. Scott Boland and debutant Brendan Doggett will replace them in the pace attack, which will be led by Mitchell Starc.
Ahead of the series, some have questioned England’s preparations; however, McCullum feels his team is ready for the fight.
“We’ve got our team to the start line. I feel like our horse is going to run well. Whether we find another horse in the race that is better than us, who knows,” he said.
England have also named their probable XII for the opening Test, which will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth from November 21.
