Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that he is frustrated with Zak Crawley’s concentration levels while batting.
Speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, Vaughan said: “Zak Crawley frustrates the life out of me. His concentration levels are not the strongest. If you go to the start of the series where he played the big booming drives, those drives have gone away now. He’s not chasing the ball outside off stump. But today I was watching him and that should not get you out as a quality opening batter.”
Crawley stitched an opening partnership of 35 runs with Ben Duckett before getting out on the first day of the fifth Test of the ongoing Ashes series 2025/26 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). He scored 16 off 29 balls before being trapped LBW by Michael Neser.
The right-handed batter has had an average series so far, scoring 272 runs with one more innings left at an average of 30.22, which includes two fifties.
In his overall Test career, the 27-year-old has played 63 Test matches, scoring 3,569 runs at an average of 31.58.
Despite his criticism, Vaughan believes that Crawley has significant potential and feels England should continue backing him.
“I hear fans around the world saying Crawley averages 30, but there’s a bigger average in him than he’s giving at the moment. It’s just concentration. I know there is a lot more in the tank and I do think England have to stay with him,” he added.
