Former England batter Geoffrey Boycott praised the England team for their win in the fourth Test against Australia in the ongoing Ashes series 2025/26. Boycott wrote in his column for the Telegraph that England “played better” than the Aussies.

“England won the Boxing Day Test because they played better cricket than Australia. It was no fluke. Winning the toss was a bit of good luck, but England’s bowling in the second innings was excellent. They were fuller, straighter and the Australian batting succumbed to the pressure of consistently facing more balls on a full length.”

Despite being down 3-0 in the series, England fought back in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), defeating Australia by four wickets in a low-scoring contest. The match ended in just two days, for which experts criticised the pitch.

England’s bowlers were impressive throughout the match. Brydon Carse took four crucial wickets in Australia’s second innings to restrict them to 132.

Boycott praised Carse for rectifying his mistake.

“I have written throughout the series that Brydon Carse has a big heart, but he was banging the ball into the pitch too short and going for too many runs. This time, he put the ball in good areas and earned his reward with four wickets. The one he bowled Travis Head with was perfect as it pitched on the stumps, seamed away and hit the top of off stump. It was a corker and Head gave him a nod of approval as he passed him on his way out, as if to say, ‘I can’t play that mate’. The question is, why did it take until the fourth Test for Carse to get the message?”
