Joe Root has now gone 29 innings without a Test century Down Under, but the number one-ranked Test batter is confident of constructing an innings come the second Test in Brisbane, which starts on 4 December.

In the Ashes series opener, Root registered scores of 0 and 8 as England slumped to a heavy defeat. While there is pressure on the team to come back from that loss, Root is also under pressure to get past the three-figure mark on Australian soil.

“I’m making sure I’m clear on how I want to construct an innings against the pink ball in these conditions, against this attack,” asserted Root during a media interaction in Brisbane. “That’s what this week is about… just readying yourself as best as possible, having good conversations about how we can work together and build those big partnerships that are going to set up games for us.”

England’s most prolific run-scorer in Test cricket, Root has a career average of 50.94, but it drops to 38.53 in Australia. His average in pink-ball Tests is even worse at 34.5, with a top score of 67 in three matches.

The second Ashes Test will be a day-night affair. Australia hold a proud record in Tests played with the pink ball. Out of their 14 pink-ball Tests, they have lost only once — to West Indies at the Gabba early last year. England will also look to register a win at a venue where they have a dreadful record, last winning there in 1986–87.
