The debate over Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening spot in Team India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 is heating up. Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has now offered his insights, saying that Jaiswal fits automatically into the role as he was a backup opener in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Gill has gained everyone’s attention ahead of the Asia Cup due to his England Test series heroics. The new Test captain of the Indian team was the leading scorer with 754 runs in ten innings.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin raised questions about Gill’s position in India’s Asia Cup squad and spoke about the advantage of having Jaiswal.
“There are a few talking points regarding the Asia Cup,” he said. “The first question that comes to everyone’s mind is whether Shubman Gill fits into the T20 plans because in the last World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the backup opener. So Jaiswal automatically gets a kick-in. Rohit Sharma is not going to be a part of that team, so Jaiswal automatically gets a look-in.”
For Ashwin, the question still remains on who will be India’s opener. While the final selection is yet to be made, Sanju Samson’s role also remains a concern.
“Now, who is going to be that other opener? Shubman Gill had an outstanding series. Can he return to the squad? Sanju Samson has had a fabulous run as a T20 opener for India. So I think it is a tricky state for the selectors,” he added.
The final selection of Team India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled for August 19.
