Team India has their five-match Test tour to England ahead next month. With players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announcing their retirements from the format, the question now lingers on who will get the captaincy. Shubman Gill, who has been handling the vice-captain role since last year, is in contention and most likely the front-runner.

The Gujarat Titans (GT) captain’s performance in this IPL season has been a major factor for the team, currently sitting at the top spot of the points table. However, when it comes to Test cricket, he hasn’t been in much luck. In 32 matches, Gill has scored a total of 1893 runs at an average of 35.05.

But now, the former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has offered a piece of advice on the captaincy role on his YouTube channel. “I hope Gujarat Titans qualify for the IPL playoffs. If Gill gains honour there, it might make his transition to leadership easier. But captaincy, especially in Tests, is not about one good season. A leader should know what’s happening in first-class cricket too.”

“He should be in the conversation,” says Ashwin

While Gill remains in suggestion, Ashwin gives another option for the Indian team to consider for the captaincy role.

As the leadership now hangs in to find a best fit, Ashwin recommends his spin partner Ravindra Jadeja to take over the role. His experience and skills come in part to becoming a Test captain for the Indian team.

Talking about his experience, Ashwin says, “Let’s not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should be in the conversation. If you’re willing to train a new guy for two years and then make him captain, Jadeja can do that for two years too. They (India) can even play him as vice-captain (under Jadeja). It will seem like I’m throwing in a wildcard.”
