Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes that India are the favourites to win the 2025 Asia Cup.
“I wouldn’t call them contenders — they’re coming in as champions,” Nayar told Sony Sports. “Given the kind of squad they have and the way they’re playing in this format, it’s their tournament to lose. If they don’t win it, something has definitely gone wrong.”
India started the tournament with a dominant victory over the UAE, winning by nine wickets with 93 balls to spare. Not only did they secure two points, but the emphatic win also boosted their net run rate to +10.483 — their highest ever in terms of balls remaining.
Nayar also praised the role of India’s spinners in the opening match.
“With the squad depth we have, and the way our spinners bowled in the last match, I firmly believe that if you’re bowling well, winning a championship becomes much easier. So, it’s India’s tournament to lose,” Nayar added.
India fielded three spinners in their first match — Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel. All three performed well, but Kuldeep, in particular, was outstanding. He took 4 for 7 in 2.1 overs, with an economy rate of 3.20, marking an impressive return to the Indian T20I side after more than a year.
