Bangladesh’s spin consultant Mushtaq Ahmed recognises the threat posed by Afghanistan’s spinners and has also highlighted Bangladesh’s concerns during the middle overs ahead of their must-win Asia Cup fixture against Afghanistan.
Afghanistan’s biggest strength lies in their spin department. They have as many as six quality spin-bowling options, capable of dismantling any batting line-up. With conditions in the UAE on the slower side, Mushtaq is well aware of the threat posed by Afghanistan’s spinners and the damage they can inflict during the middle phase of the game.
“Their spin department is very good, especially in the middle overs,” he said. “If we can counter their spin effectively and put a decent score on the board, we can challenge them because our bowling unit is also strong. My main concern is the middle overs.”
Having won one match and lost one, Bangladesh will play their final Group B game in Abu Dhabi against Afghanistan. If they lose, they will be out of the tournament. And even if they win, there is no guarantee they will qualify for the Super 4s. A lot needs to go their way for Bangladesh to progress to the next round, and Mushtaq understands the scenario.
“You have to believe. The coaches and management keep reminding the players that belief is very important. It’s difficult, of course, having to rely on ifs and buts, but you must focus on winning the match first,” he added.
After their win over Hong Kong, Sri Lanka became the first team to qualify from Group B, and the second overall in the tournament after India. The winner of the Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka match will determine the other team to qualify. For Bangladesh to stay alive, they must beat Afghanistan and hope for a Sri Lankan victory over Afghanistan.
