Afghanistan spinners Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have been penalised after their Asia Cup 2025 match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. Both players were found guilty of breaching minor rules of the ICC Code of Conduct and received one demerit point each. This was the first time either player had been punished in the last 24 months.

Noor Ahmad was charged under Article 2.8, which states: “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.” Mujeeb Ur Rahman was charged under Article 2.2, which refers to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.”

During the game, Mujeeb broke the stumps with his towel, while Noor showed visible disagreement during the 16th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when one of his deliveries was called a wide. Both players admitted their offences and accepted the punishment proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so no formal hearing was required.

The charges were laid by on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Virender Sharma, along with third umpire Faisal Afridi and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.

On the field, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by six wickets to remain unbeaten in the tournament. The loss marked Afghanistan’s second consecutive defeat and ended their Asia Cup 2025 campaign.
