Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has provided an update on Dunith Wellalage’s availability for the Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.
On the night when Sri Lanka played their final Group B match against Afghanistan, Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away due to a heart attack. The tragic incident occurred while the match was still in progress. An emotional head coach of the Sri Lanka men’s team, Sanath Jayasuriya, was seen consoling the young all-rounder.
After the match on Wednesday, Wellalage travelled back to Colombo with team manager Mahinda Halangode. There were questions regarding his availability, as he returned home for family rituals. Amid the uncertainty, the Sri Lanka Cricket board has now provided an update.
“Dunith Wellalage, who returned home to pay his last respects to his late father, will rejoin the team tomorrow morning,” the SLC said in a statement. “He will travel to the UAE tonight, accompanied by Team Manager Mahinda Halangode.”
Sri Lanka are set to play their first Super Four game against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. According to SLC, Wellalage will be available for selection for the match. His return means the former Asia Cup champions will have a full-strength squad available.
“Sri Lanka will begin its Super Four stage campaign of the ongoing tournament tomorrow against Bangladesh in the UAE. Wellalage will be available for selection for the game.”
The 22-year-old Sri Lankan cricketer had a forgettable outing in his first game of the tournament against Afghanistan. After bowling three tight overs, Wellalage was hit for five sixes as Mohammad Nabi took him to the cleaners.
