India kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against hosts United Arab Emirates, and the match was a mismatch in every sense of the word. The giants of the game faced off against a considerably weaker side. The defending champions dominated from the outset, defeating the hosts by nine wickets while chasing a target of just 58 runs. In the match, Kuldeep Yadav returned to the white-ball squad and scalped four sparkling wickets. On the other end, Jasprit Bumrah sent the opener back with his picture-perfect yorker. Yet, while it was an expected result for Indian fans, it won’t be remembered for the wickets or runs but for the rare gesture of integrity that we witnessed.
The incident came in the 13th over while the UAE batters were trying to salvage an already frayed innings. Junaid Siddique, on strike, was attempting to rebuild after an early collapse. He swung at Shivam Dube, missed, and lost his balance. Sanju Samson, alert behind the stumps, aimed at the wickets, and his direct hit caught Siddique short of the crease. The third umpire confirmed the dismissal. But as the big screen flashed ‘out’, there were no celebrations among the Indian team. Siddique too remained at the crease. Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav was seen speaking to the on-field umpire, making it clear he was withdrawing the appeal.
What had happened was that, while Shivam Dube charged in during his run-up, his towel had slipped from his waistband and Siddique was pointing towards it as Samson collected the ball. While it had no bearing on the dismissal, Surya chose to withdraw the appeal.
It was a game where India could afford to show goodwill. In complete control, they knew they could offer a batter a lifeline. Surya’s gesture was met with appreciation from both sides.
Of course, UAE, against a much stronger Indian bowling attack, could not make use of the reprieve. Their innings folded for just 57, with only the openers reaching double digits. Once Alishan Sharafu fell, Kuldeep’s spin finished the chapter swiftly. India’s batting innings was little more than a formality, as Abhishek Sharma launched fireworks.
India will now prepare for their marquee clashes, especially the one against Pakistan on Sunday. The team carries form, momentum, and the goodwill gesture that reminded everyone why cricket is still a gentleman’s game.
