Former cricketer Virender Sehwag believes the 2025 Asia Cup will be a chance for India to strengthen their T20 squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Sehwag has advised the new players to utilize the platform and showcase the skills required to be in the team.

“I think in the T20 format, this Asia Cup can serve as a great preparation for our 2026 T20 World Cup,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to see which new players should be given chances and who can be included in the squad. You can start building a team for the World Cup. In my opinion, there is no better opportunity for the Indian team to check its strength than the Asia Cup.”

India have no chance in WC: Srikkanth

Meanwhile, Krishnamachari Srikkanth has opposed India’s squad selection for the Asia Cup. The former captain and chief selector thinks that with this team, India are far from a World Cup victory.

“We might win the Asia, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. “Are you going to take this team to the World Cup? Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away?”

Srikkanth believes the selection committee has considered past performances. “They have gone backwards. Axar Patel has been axed from vice-captaincy. I don’t know how Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana have come in. IPL is considered the main criterion for selection, but the selectors seem to have considered performances before that,” he added.

Srikkanth also questioned India’s batting lineup for the Asia Cup. “Who will bat at No. 5? It has to be Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma or Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh. Hardik Pandya usually bats at No. 5. So now, Axar cannot bat at 6. I can’t understand how they picked Dube. Yashasvi Jaiswal performed in international cricket and IPL. What does he do?” he questioned.

India, the defending champions, will be hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka.
