
The Asian Athletics Championships commenced on May 27 in Gumi, South Korea. Most Indian athletes were involved in qualification rounds on Day 1. India clinched two medals to kick off the event on a high note: a gold in the 10,000m by national record holder Gulveer Singh and a bronze in the 20km race walk by one of India’s finest race walkers, Servin Sebastian.
India added six more medals on Day 2, taking the overall tally to eight – 2 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze, placing them third in the overall medal standings.The day started with qualifications and ended with medal rush.
Women’s Long Jump Qualification: Shaili and Ancy advance to final
India had a strong start to Day 2 in the women’s long jump qualifications. Ancy Sojan jumped 6.12m to finish 4th in qualification Group A. Shaili Singh leaped 6.17m to secure 2nd in Group B. Both qualified for the final and will aim for podium finishes on Day 3.
Women’s 100m Hurdles: Jyothi Yarraji into final
India’s hurdle queen Jyothi Yarraji clocked 13.18 seconds, finishing third in Heat 1 and qualifying for the final. Despite looking slightly unbalanced in the last two hurdles, Jyothi held her ground. The national record holder will now aim to defend the gold medal she won in the previous edition held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Men’s 400m Final: Vishal TK sets personal best, misses medal
Vishal TK, who had impressed in the heats with a personal best, once again bettered his time in the final, clocking 45.57 seconds. Unfortunately, he narrowly missed the bronze medal by just 0.02 seconds, finishing 4th. This was the fastest timing by an Indian quarter-miler in the 2025 season.
Women’s 400m Final: Rupal clinches silver, Vithya finishes 5th
Rupal ran a strong race, clocking 52.68 seconds to secure the silver medal behind Japan’s Nanako Matsumoto. Although she was trailing slightly during the race, she surged ahead to finish second. Rupal’s silver is India’s first medal of the day on Day 2. Vithya Ramraj finished fifth with a time of 53.00 seconds.
Men’s 1500m Final: Yoonus Shah wins bronze
India’s middle-distance runner Yoonus Shah, currently in good form, claimed his first international medal, a bronze with a timing of 3:43.03s. Leading for most of the race, he was overtaken in the final 100 metres by Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa and South Korea’s Jaeung Lee
Women’s 1500m Final: Pooja grabs silver, Lili Das misses podium
22-year-old Pooja from Haryana staged a brilliant finish to clinch silver in the women’s 1500m, clocking 4:10.83s. She surged from fifth place at the final stretch to overtake Japanese and Chinese runners. Lili Das put up a strong fight but finished 4th, narrowly missing out on a medal.
Men’s Triple Jump Final: silver for Praveen, Abdulla finishes 4th
In a rain-interrupted final, Praveen Chithravel, the national record holder, secured silver with a jump of 16.90m, earning his second major senior international medal.
Abdulla Aboobacker, the defending champion, finished 4th with a best of 16.72m.
Decathlon: Tejaswin Shankar wins silver
Tejaswin Shankar showcased brilliant all-round performance across the 10 events, finishing with a total of 7618 points in the two-day event. He won silver and finished just 16 points behind China’s Fei Xiang. This an upgrade on his bronze medal in the last edition for TJ and makes him the first Indian decathlete to win two medals at the Asian Athletics Championships.
4×400m Mixed Relay: India dominate, defends title
The highlight of Day 2 was the 4×400m mixed relay final, where the quartet of Santosh T, Rupal Chaudhary, Vishal TK and Subha Venkatesan defended the crown from 2023 in dominant fashion. India finished ahead of China with a time of 3:18.12, claiming gold and boosting India’s medal tally.
Team India now stand 3rd behind China and Japan in the overall medal tally with 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals at the Asian Athletics Championships. The 10000m women’s final was halted due to heavy rain.
