The brand-new Mondo track is set and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, is ready to host India’s first-ever World Para Athletics Championships from September 27 to October 5, 2025.
India will field its largest-ever contingent of 73 athletes across different events. As Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president Devendra Jhajharia told RevSportz earlier, the team is expected to win more than 20 medals.
A milestone for the contingent is that 35 athletes will make their World Championships debut. “Never before have so many Indian athletes debuted in a single edition,” said Jhajharia, stressing that, “each debutant has overcome tremendous odds to reach this stage, embodying the hopes of a new generation.”
For many athletes, competing in front of a home crowd will add extra motivation. Paris Paralympics gold medallist and T64 high jumper Praveen Kumar told PCI, “Competing at the World Championships in front of my home crowd will be very special.
“I have worked hard for this moment, training every day with discipline and focus, fine-tuning every jump with my coach.”
Praveen also mentioned the new Mondo track at the JNL Stadium. “Now, with the new Mondo track at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, I feel faster, stronger, and more confident than ever.”
On the commercial front, Indian Oil has come on board as the title sponsor, with the event officially branded as the Indian Oil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships. Adding to the momentum, Prasar Bharti announced on Friday, September 12, that it would broadcast the event nationwide and internationally.
Prasar Bharti CEO Gaurav Dwivedi said, “It’s a great honour for us to showcase the progress made by India in the world of sports and in technology.
“Our feed will reach more than 100 countries, and we are ready to set new benchmarks in sports production.”
Jhajharia hailed this as a historic step – “The broadcast of the World Para Athletics Championships on Doordarshan will ensure our athletes’ performances reach every corner of the country, inspiring people from all walks of life.”
