India’s young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi showed signs of rare frustration on Day 1 of the second Youth Test against Australia U19 at Mackay. The 14-year-old’s reaction to the umpire’s controversial decision has become the main talking point of the match.
The moment occurred when Vaibhav, having made a good start, was dismissed for 20 runs off just 14 balls. He was given out caught behind off pacer Charles Lachmund. However, replays showed that the ball had only brushed his pads and missed the bat entirely. The on-field umpire thought otherwise, resulting in Vaibhav’s dismissal.
The young left-handed batter looked visibly shocked at the crease; he even pointed to his thigh pad before slowly walking off the field, clearly unhappy with the decision. His visible frustration — swinging his bat in anger — was a rare sight for those familiar with his otherwise disciplined behaviour in junior cricket.
Before his unfortunate dismissal, Vaibhav had impressed with his attacking intent. The India U19 opener struck two boundaries and a six before being controversially given out.
Earlier in the match, during the first innings, Australia U19 were bowled out for just 135, with Alex Lee-Young top-scoring for the hosts with 66 runs. In reply, India scored 171, taking a 36-run lead, thanks to solid bowling performances from Henil Patel and Khilan Patel, who took three wickets each.
In their second innings, Australia collapsed again for 116, and India comfortably chased down the target of 81 runs, winning by seven wickets inside two days.
