Australia captain Pat Cummins has hinted that India’s upcoming ODI series could possibly be the last time Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play international cricket in Australia. The Indian duo will return to international cricket after eight months, having been named in the squad for the three-match series, which starts on October in Perth.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Cummins said that the Australian crowd might be witnessing the final appearance of the star duo on home soil. “Virat and Rohit have been part of almost every Indian side for the last 15 years, so this might be the last chance for the Australian public to see them playing out here,” he said. “They’ve obviously been champions of the game for India and are always very well supported. Whenever we play them, the crowd gets loud.”
Recently, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the duo remain part of India’s future plans. “It is going to benefit us a lot. They are great batsmen. We will succeed in defeating Australia with them in the team. It is absolutely wrong to say that this is their last ODI series. It depends on the players as to when they choose to retire,” Shukla told ANI.
Even before the squad was announced, Cricket Australia (CA) had already hinted at a special tribute for the two legends. CA CEO Todd Greenberg said: “This might be the last time that we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. And if that is the case — who knows, it might not be — but if it is, we want to make sure we give them a great send-off and a reflection of the incredible contribution they’ve made to international cricket.”
