Australia batter Matthew Short noted that there is a certain pattern in the way Virat Kohli is getting out, and he trusts either Josh Hazlewood or Mitchell Starc to execute their plans to dismiss the former Indian captain cheaply once again in the second ODI in Adelaide.
In the series opener in Perth, Kohli was dismissed early while chasing a delivery outside off stump. Mitchell Starc tempted him into playing one of his trademark shots, but the Indian batting stalwart failed to time the ball, and Cooper Connolly took a stunning catch at point. For the umpteenth time in his career, Kohli was out chasing a wide delivery.
“I’m not in the fast-bowling meetings, but that seems to be the way he has been getting out recently,” Short told reporters in Adelaide.
Hazlewood has dismissed Kohli on five occasions, while Starc is the only bowler to have dismissed him for a duck twice in ODIs. Having played both with and against Kohli during their careers, the two veteran pacers have a good idea of how to bowl to him. Short backs his teammates to dismiss Kohli cheaply.
“Some of the guys like ‘Hoff’ (Josh Hazlewood) and ‘Starcy’ (Mitchell Starc) have bowled a lot against him – they know what they’re doing. In Perth, they let the conditions do the work: a bit of swing and nip off the wicket, so I’m sure they’ll look to do the same again,” he said.
The series-deciding second ODI in Adelaide will be played on October 23. This could be Kohli’s final international appearance in Adelaide.
