India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav praised Abhishek Sharma for his brilliant batting despite India’s loss by four wickets against Australia in the second T20I of the ongoing five-match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Suryakumar said that Abhishek’s clear understanding of his game has been key to his success.

“He knows his game, knows his identity, and it’s good he’s not changing it – that’s what’s brought him success. Hopefully, he sticks with it and plays many more knocks like this for us.”

Abhishek was magnificent at the MCG as wickets were tumbling from one end and it seemed that he was batting on a different pitch. When the other batters were finding it difficult to stay at the wicket, the 25-year-old was playing his natural game. The left-hander reached his sixth fifty in 23 balls and stitched a 56-run partnership with Harshit Rana, forming the backbone of India’s innings. Abhishek was finally dismissed in the 19th over after scoring 68 off 37 balls at a strike rate of 183.78.

Suryakumar also applauded Josh Hazlewood, who took 3/13, saying that he put India on the backfoot very early in their innings from which they never recovered.

“The way he bowled in the powerplay – if you’re four down early, it’s very difficult to recover. Credit goes to him, he bowled really well.” he added.
