Dewald Brevis played a breathtaking innings to become the youngest South African cricketer to hit a T20I hundred. He took South Africa to a huge total of 218/7 against Australia in the second T20I of the three-match series in Darwin.
Brevis came to bat when South Africa’s score was 44/2 in the fifth over. He hit his first boundary on the third ball he faced, smashing a four off Ben Dwarshuis through mid-off. His first six came on the seventh ball he faced, when he smashed Glenn Maxwell’s tossed-up delivery over long-on.
In the 12th over of the innings, bowled by Maxwell, Brevis scored 23 runs that included three sixes and a four and, in the process, completed his maiden fifty in T20I cricket. However, he was dropped on the fourth ball of that over by substitute fielder Matthew Kuhnemann.
In the next over, bowled by Josh Hazlewood, Brevis moved into the 80s when he hit two fours and a six. He pulled the fifth ball of the 15th over to fine leg to convert his maiden T20I fifty into a hundred.
He brought up the second-fastest T20I hundred for South Africa in just 41 balls. His partnership with Tristan Stubbs, worth 126 runs off 57 balls for the fourth wicket, laid a solid foundation for South Africa to post their highest T20I total against Australia on the board.
Brevis remained unbeaten on 125, which is the highest T20I score by any South African batter. His innings included 12 fours and eight sixes, at a strike rate of 223.21.
