Cricket Australia (CA) has announced the squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, set to begin at home in August. Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood make their return to both the ODI and T20I sides, while Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc remain sidelined in preparation for a demanding Test summer later this year. Mitchell Owen has been named in Australia’s ODI squad for the first time ahead of the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa in August.
While several senior players were rested for the recent T20I series against the West Indies, the upcoming matches against a formidable South African team see the inclusion of Head, Hazlewood, and fast bowler Lance Morris, who rejoins the ODI squad. Marnus Labuschagne has also retained his place in the 50-over format. Mitchell Marsh will captain both 14-player squads for the three T20Is and three ODIs.
Fraser-McGurk, Hardie left out of the T20I squad
Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, and Xavier Bartlett have not been selected for the T20Is. However, Bartlett has earned a spot in the ODI squad.
Selector Chair George Bailey commented on the squad composition: “With a trimmed squad for this home series and the return of Head and Hazlewood, some players have missed out for now, but they remain firmly in our plans. The group has made the most of recent opportunities, and we expect that to continue through this series and into the tours of New Zealand and India later in the year, as we aim to strike a balance between development and Test summer preparations.”
The T20I series begins with two matches in Darwin on August 10 and 12, followed by the third game in Cairns on August 16. The three-match ODI series will start in Cairns on August 19 and wrap up with two games in Mackay on August 22 and 24.
