South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad is impressed with young batting sensation Dewald Brevis and has encouraged him to continue playing the way he does, without changing his style as he grows older.
“I think sometimes we can be too humble,” Conrad told reporters after the third T20I in Cairns. “We don’t show off enough to the world what we’re capable of doing – like Brevis does. He’s obviously going to grow older, but I hope he continues to play like a 22-year-old. Sometimes, with experience, players tend to adjust the way they play. He’s a breath of fresh air.”
Conrad also clarified that he is not asking his players to emulate the Australian approach.
“This has got nothing to do with the way Australia play. They’ve got a blueprint, and there are times when it looks absolutely brilliant – box office stuff. And there are times when you can have them in trouble, like we did in the first couple of games. But they stay true to it,” added Conrad.
South Africa lost the three-match T20I series to Australia 2–1. Brevis scored a record-breaking century in the second T20I, becoming the second-fastest South African to reach a hundred – off just 41 balls. The 22-year-old followed it up with a brilliant half-century in the third match, finishing with 180 runs across the three games.
