South Africa’s batting coach Ashwell Prince has shed light on a subtle but significant technical tweak that helped Aiden Markram craft a memorable century in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia. Markram etched his name into the history books by becoming the first South African batter to score a hundred in the final of an ICC event, finishing unbeaten on 102* at stumps on Day 3 at Lord’s.
After a disappointing first-innings outing, Markram returned to the crease with positive intent, striking the ball cleanly and maintaining a brisk scoring rate.
Speaking after the day’s play, Prince praised the opener’s temperament and composure under pressure, hailing him as someone who thrives in big moments. He also explained the minor technical flaw Markram corrected leading into the match.
Markram is the man of big occasions: Prince
“Well, we certainly know that he’s someone for the big occasion of that there’s no doubt,” said Prince at the press-conference. “He’s done a little bit of technical work, not a lot. I think in the last little while he’s just had a little tendency of his hands sort of pushing away from his body, cutting across the wall sometimes. But it wasn’t a big fix. As soon as he saw a few videos of himself doing that, it was quite a simple fix.”
Prince also drew attention to Markram’s fighting century on a difficult surface at Newlands against India, a performance he believes highlighted the opener’s resilience and class.
“When I talk about his ability to play big innings, albeit in a losing cause at Newlands on a very, very difficult pitch. He played an unbelievable innings there, where everybody else was really struggling. And he got a hundred on that surface. And so, we know what he’s capable of,” he added.
Markram may have taken centre stage with his century, but he found a steady partner in skipper Temba Bavuma, who remained unbeaten on 65. Together, the pair stitched an unbroken 143-run stand for the third wicket, putting South Africa within touching distance of a historic victory. They now require just 69 more runs to claim their first WTC title.
