South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada believes it is time for the Proteas to move on from their World Test Championship final win at Lord’s and focus on next year’s T20 World Cup.
Rabada made this remark as South Africa prepare for a six-match white-ball series against Australia, beginning on Sunday in Darwin.
The Temba Bavuma-led side ended their ICC trophy drought by defeating Australia in the WTC final.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Rabada reflected on the significance of the WTC final victory while emphasising the need to shift focus to the upcoming series in Australia.
“I think it was special, and I’ve done so many interviews on that since,” Rabada told reporters in Darwin ahead of the series. “I don’t think we’ll ever forget that as a team, and South Africa won’t either. But the show moves on, and looking ahead to the T20 World Cup, I guess the approach will be a bit different. Now, you know, there’s no fear of anything.”
“The rivalry between Australia and South Africa has always been something to behold,” Rabada added. “It’s always hard cricket being played whenever we face Australia. It always feels like they get the best out of us because they’re right in our faces.”
The upcoming white-ball tour of Australia — consisting of three T20Is and three ODIs — will mark the return of several first-choice players, including Rabada, Bavuma, and Aiden Markram, to competitive cricket for the first time since the WTC final. After missing the Test and tri-series in Zimbabwe, these players are set to return against a strong Australian side.
