South Africa began the three-match ODI series with a commanding win, defeating Australia by 98 runs in the first match at Cairns. Batting first, the visitors posted 296, thanks to half-centuries from Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke, and captain Temba Bavuma. Keshav Maharaj claimed 5 for 33 as Australia were bowled out for 198 in the run-chase.

The game saw several momentum shifts. Markram (82) gave South Africa a solid platform as an opener with a 92-run stand alongside Ryan Rickelton (33). Breetzke (57) added valuable runs in the middle, while Bavuma steadied the innings with a patient 65. Although Travis Head slowed South Africa’s scoring with a surprise four-wicket spell, Wiaan Mulder’s late cameo of 31 from 26 balls lifted the Proteas to the highest ODI total ever recorded in Cairns.

Australia’s chase started steadily, with Travis Head contributing 27 and Mitchell Marsh leading the way with a fighting 88. However, the match turned completely when Maharaj came into the attack. He dismissed Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Aaron Hardie in quick succession, leaving Australia struggling at 75 for 5. Marsh fought on but lacked support. Eventually, Australia’s innings was wrapped up inside 41 overs.

It was a memorable spell for Maharaj, as he claimed his maiden five-wicket haul and was named Player of the Match. With the win in Cairns, South Africa take a 1–0 lead in the series. The second ODI will be played in Mackay on 22 August.
