After smashing his maiden international hundred, South Africa batter Dewald Brevis vows to keep working hard and delivering match-winning performances for his team.
The Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin witnessed a batting masterclass from Brevis on Tuesday, 12 July. Against Australia in a must-win game, South Africa were struggling at 57 for 3 inside seven overs. In walked Brevis, who turned the tide by regularly finding the boundary, reaching his fifty off just 25 balls. He needed only 16 more deliveries to bring up his century, finishing on an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls.
Nicknamed Baby AB after his exploits in the 2022 U19 World Cup, Brevis initially struggled at the senior level, failing to impress against Australia in his debut series. After two low scores, he was dropped from the side. Last year, he made a promise to himself to be the ‘original Dewald’ and to hit every ball, and this year he’s been delivering on that promise.
“I believe God blessed me with a talent to play like that, to play aggressively,” Brevis said in the press-conference. “Last year, on 28 December, I made that commitment. I got a few people, they know who they are, who I trust and the main thing was just to be the original Dewald and to be on that side of it and every ball, wherever it is, to watch it and to hit it.”
Brevis has started to find his feet in international cricket. The century in Darwin looks to be the first of many. He’s made a strong start and is determined to build on what promises to be an exciting career.
“This is just the start, if I could say it like that,” he said. “I just want to keep working hard, do the same things and the next match is the next match. So this 100, I can enjoy it now, think a bit about it, watch it maybe, but then when the next match comes, it’s completely a new match and anything can happen.”
