Australian all-rounder Beau Webster is fully determined to keep his place in the Test squad by performing well in the Sheffield Shield. The right-hander, who has already played seven Tests and scored four fifties, knows that competition for spots in the squad will only get tougher ahead of the Ashes.
“When you’re at the top level, you’re fighting to hang on to your spot,” Webster said in Hobart after returning from a county stint following the West Indies series. He admitted that with Cameron Green resuming bowling, his own place in the lower middle order could face extra scrutiny.
“With all the wonderful cricketers around the country, and especially a guy like Cameron Green—he batted at the top of the order [in the West Indies] and didn’t bowl. He’s obviously going to be back bowling this summer, which is going to put a bit more pressure on my spot at No. 6 as the all-rounder. But I welcome it.”
Webster also said that Marnus Labuschagne’s versatility adds to the challenge, as selectors have the option to shuffle positions to make space for both specialist openers and all-rounders. Still, he is ready for the fight.
“I feel like I’ve been in this position before a lot in my career, where I’ve got to score runs to either go to the next level or stay in the team. It’s certainly not unfamiliar.”
He is eyeing four Sheffield Shield matches to strengthen his case. “I feel like I’ve scored some tough runs. At the same time, there’s no hundred next to my name, which I would have loved… I feel like I’ve got all the tools to succeed this summer in the Ashes.”
The Ashes begin on 21 November in Perth as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
