Both Australia and England were penalized for not maintaining the required over-rate during the first Test of the five-match Ashes series at Edgbaston in Birmingham. As a result, both teams were docked 2 points and their players fined 40 percent of their match fee.

The decision was made by Andy Pycroft, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, who determined that both teams were two overs short of their targets, accounting for time allowances.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined 20 percent of their match fee for each over they fail to bowl within the allocated time. Additionally, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, teams are penalized one point for each over short.
