In a shocking incident in Indore, two Australian women cricketers, who are in India for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, were stalked, with one of them molested by a man riding a motorcycle.
“Cricket Australia can confirm two members of the Australian Women’s Team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a café in Indore. The matter was reported by team security to police who are handling the matter,” said Cricket Australia’s statement on the matter.
According to police officials, the unfortunate incident took place on Thursday morning in the Khajrana Road area. The man linked to the incident was arrested on Friday. A bystander had recorded the criminal’s motorcycle number, which led to the arrest of the accused, Akil Khan.
“Khan has prior criminal cases registered against him, and an investigation is ongoing,” Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi said, according to PTI.
The two Australian cricketers were on their way to a cafe from their hotel when the man on the bike began following them. He allegedly touched one of the players inappropriately before riding away.
Upon reaching the hotel, the players immediately contacted their team security officer, Danny Simmons, who coordinated with local security liaison officers and arranged for a vehicle to assist them.
After being informed of the incident, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Himani Mishra met with the two cricketers, recorded their statements, and registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the police station under Sections 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and 78 (stalking) via Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Australia are set to face South Africa at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. Both teams have already qualified for the semi-finals.
