AUSW vs ENGW: Record Breaking fifth-wicket Stand by Gardner and Sutherland guides Australia to Victory

Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardner staged a great comeback to take Australia to a memorable six-wicket win against England in the 23rd match of ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. This is the second highest fifth-wicket partnership in Women’s World Cup history.

Australia won the toss and opted to field. Chasing a target of 245, Australia were at one stage 68/4 after 15.5 overs. It was at this important time that Sutherland and Gardener took charge. They stitched together an unbeaten partnership of 180 off 148 balls and took their team to victory. The duo displayed a masterclass of batting. Both players showcased a range of strokes, rotated the strike and punished any loose ball they got. 

Gardner scored a brilliant century and remained unbeaten at 104 off 73 balls, including 16 fours and Sutherland remained not out at 98, including nine fours and a six. The highest fifth-wicket partnership in Women’s World Cup was stitched by SC Taylor and J Cassar, who put on a partnership of 188-run partnership against Sri Lanka in Lincoln during the ICC World Cup 2000. 

At the end, Australia won the match comfortably by six wickets with 57 balls to spare.
