On April 24, Sachin Tendulkar celebrated his 50th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, the venue for seven of his 49 ODI centuries, named the West Stand after him. Tendulkar has a special bond with this ground, and his greatest knocks there included two hundreds during Coca-Cola Cup in April 1998. The most memorable, a blazing 131-ball 143, came after a sandstorm had interrupted play, and is immortalised in cricket’s annals as the Desert Storm. The ceremony to rename the stand was attended by Khalaf Bukhatir, the CEO of Sharjah Cricket. Tendulkar could not attend the…

Ajinkya Rahane turns 35 on June 6, the day before the start of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia at The Oval in south London. He played the last of his 82 Test for India at Newlands in Cape Town in January 2022. Even a few weeks ago – before Shreyas Iyer’s back issues ruled him out for the foreseeable future, and Suryakumar Yadav’s form nosedived – even Rahane would have told you that his chances of a Test comeback were slim to non-existent. But the cricket Gods work in mysterious ways. Normally, you wouldn’t think…

To be honest, I have a lot of stories with Paaji and memories that are countless. If I start to recall all of them, I will consume reams of newsprint. So instead, let me just say a couple of things. Growing up in Mumbai, Sachin Tendulkar was second to God for me. He was a part of my growing up. My inspiration to play the sport has made me what I am. Cricket in our household meant Sachin Tendulkar. He was the yardstick in everything that we did. If you wanted to be the best, you needed to try and…

When you live with someone long enough, they become a part of you. To write about Sachin, therefore, isn’t easy— because it is a reflection of myself as much as it is about him. We have known each other for 33 years now. Every day has been a celebration of our similarities and differences. We have gone through different stages of our partnership, like every couple—courtship, marriage, becoming parents, and to now seeing our children become adults and carve out their own lives. We come from very different cultural backgrounds. Yet, we have been brought up with the same value…

Overview Both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals have had disastrous starts to their IPL campaigns, so much so midway through the season, both have very little margin for error left. Delhi lost their first five before a morale-boosting win against Kolkata Knight Riders, while Hyderabad have lost, won and lost games in blocks of two. With the leading sides having already banked eight points, Delhi and Hyderabad – along with Kolkata – are the teams most in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom. Hyderabad need much more from their marquee players. Harry Brook has made one sparkling…

There is no hiding from the fact that every time Sachin went out to bat, he was followed by a million prayers and expectations. It was always the same since he made his mark on the world stage as a 16-year-old; as his stature grew, so also did the hopes of his billion Indian fans, who stayed glued to the TV sets till he was in the middle. I was no different, part of the ‘Tendulkar generation’, as I call it, the entire legion of fans that lived, laughed and cried every moment of his cricketing time. Even before I…

For all that we heard it 264 times in international cricket, it arrives with a jolt. In our mind’s eye, players tend to remain fixed, unchanged and unchanging. Tendulkar had a certain immutable quality, regularity reinforced by his role: 84 per cent of his Test innings began at the fall of the second wicket, at which he emerged unfailingly as a cuckoo in a clock announcing the hour. Not for him, the modern cricketer’s endless prating about the role (‘Everyone knows what their role is’; ‘I’ve discussed my role with the coach/captain/selectors’). Tendulkar grasped his role instantly: his role was…

Though he’s likely to go down in the game’s annals as the inspirational captain-wicketkeeper who won India the full set of limited-overs trophies, and the face of the Chennai Super Kings IPL franchise, it shouldn’t be forgotten that MS Dhoni was also a fine Test batter. The stereotype of Dhoni as some sort of dasher who lacked the technique to survive in tough conditions was way off the mark. India have won a Test series in England just once since 1986. That 2007 triumph is remembered mostly for Zaheer Khan’s magnificent bowling at Trent Bridge, where he was allegedly motivated…
