–Bharath Ramaraj It is 10.45 PM at the Brabourne Stadium as Nat Sciver nonchalantly ramps a full toss from Alice Capsey over the ‘keeper’s head and into the boundary hoardings. Mumbai Indians have created history by winning the inaugural WPL and the star England all-rounder has aptly played a pivotal role. It is true that the delivery was there to be hit but Nat Sciver’s 55-ball unbeaten 60 in tricky conditions and under pressure in the summit clash against Delhi Capitals summed up her ability to stay in the present. Staying in the present. Just press the rewind button a…
The father-daughter duo that changed the shape of Indian boxing || Nikhat Zareen and Jameel Ahmed
–Boria Majumdar It was the Covid-induced lockdown and the entire country was indoors. Jameel Ahmed, Nikhat Zareen’s father, however, had a completely different worry. Zareen, who was home, was eating home-cooked food and, with little to do, was surfing the Internet all day. “She would put on weight and it wasn’t the right thing to do,” said Jameel. “We had to ensure that even during lockdown, her focus stayed on the world competitions.” The father-daughter duo soon devised their own plans. She would skip in the morning and train in the afternoons on the terrace. And the routine was as…
Exclusive: Pro Boxer Neeraj Goyat flies out for a big bout confident that he is well prepared
G Rajaraman It does not matter to Neeraj Goyat that mainstream media does not pay as much attention to his boxing as it did to his role in rescuing stranded Indians in Ukraine last year or his forays as an actor, trainer and choreographer in the world of films, including in the much talked about RRR. He has his focus on putting in his best effort to extend his win-loss record later this week. With a 17-3 record in his professional boxing career, he is on his way to the Mexican city of Guadalajara where he will take on American…
If you are an elite high performance sportsperson can you also have a high paying corporate job? Is it possible?
— Boria Majumdar Work-Life Balance possible? In an age of 24/7 work, we often hear the statement it isn’t possible. How do you have a good corporate job and balance it with being an elite high performance athlete? Don’t try it for then you will be wasting your sports career. “Why take a chance?” is often the advice. The question is how do we know it’s not possible? How do we know that the job won’t give us more joy than just being an elite athlete? That it will help in work-life balance? Why is it that sport has to…
India v Australia, third ODI, over 12.2 – Steven Smith caught KL Rahul bowled Hardik Pandya. At first glance, the aforementioned line just seems like a mere statistic from a scorecard. But there is a bit more significance attached to the dismissal. The India all-rounder had removed Travis Head in his previous over with a back of a length delivery. However, for Smith, he made a subtle change in his length as he slipped in a fuller length ball and dangled the carrot outside off. The Australia captain duly obliged by edging one to the ‘keeper. Hardik continued to…
In a major change made to playing conditions for IPL 2023, the captains of the respective sides will now nominate the 11 players and five substitutes after the toss, the official release confirmed. The change would give the chance for the respective franchises to select their best XI (including the impact player) on the basis of whether they are batting or bowling first, and reduce the importance of winning the toss. “Each captain shall nominate 11 players plus a maximum of 5 substitute fielders in writing to the IPL Match Referee after the toss,” the release noted. Incidentally, the MCC…
RevSportz Web desk: In what comes as a huge blow for Team India, Shreyas Iyer will need to undergo a surgery and is likely to miss out of action for almost five months. The injury may see Shreyas missing the IPL 2023 and World Test Championship final against Australia in June. The KKR captain is also doubtful for the 50 overs World Cup in India. Already Jasprit Bumrah is out of action since last September, Rishabh Pant is recovering from his horrific car accident. And now Shreyas Iyer will also be unavailable. Iyer has been advised of surgery by a…
G Rajaraman A visit to the BWF Badminton World Rankings lists can fill Indian hearts with pride. India has 12 men and women each in the top 100. Besides six men’s pairs and seven women’s doubles team find places in the top 100. And what’s more 10 Junior men and 15 Junior Women are perched in the top 100. It does sounds wonderful, isn’t it? All is well and hunky-dory, isn’t it? Yet, when you realise that only four Indians have featured in the finals of 21 BWF events this year, things do not look as rosy. Tanya Hemanth and…
— Boria Majumdar For long this was a demand. For long it was a grouse. Why ATK? Why ahead of Mohun Bagan? When they aren’t even involved with Sanjeev Goenka anymore why have ATK with Mohun Bagan? Ultimately fandom is the only sentiment that is a constant in sport. Why upset the sentiment? Why not change the name? Why not do it for them? And that’s what Sanjeev Goenka did last night. Dropping ATk is the best thing he could have done on the night of the ISL win. Mohun Bagan Super Giants has Mohun Bagan as the first two…
