Manu Bhaker advocates greater financial, emotional support for athletes outside National teams
Kolkata, March 5: India’s star pistol shooter Manu Bhaker today said while India’s sporting culture is evolving, there must be greater financial and emotional support for athletes outside of the National teams if India is to win more medals on the global stage. Taking part in a session titled ‘Eyeing the elusive medal’ in Trailblazers, India’s biggest sports conclave here, Manu Bhaker agreed with hockey star Vandana Kataria that things have got better in the past few years but echoed the thoughts of Squash ace Joshna Chinappa and rifle shooter Mehuli Ghosh that athletes needed greater support through their journey.…
Kolkata, March 5: India’s first individual Olympic Games gold medalist Abhinav Bindra today said contemporary athletes need to be in an environment that fosters psychological safety and one in which self-worth is much more important that external validation. “They will have to train to shut off external distractions. Social media is part of current culture. But they must make sure that primary focus is training and competition. If they take the social media route, they may succeed but that may not sustain success. They must embrace purity in pursuit,” he said in the opening session of Trailblazers, India’s biggest sports…

Mr. Boria Majumdar, founder of RevSportz highlighted the fact how important it is for media and corporate India to come forward to support sports in India apart from cricket. Women empowerment through women only? We all talk about a gender equal society. Are we working towards it? The Trailblazers initiative is a step towards the goal. In discussion with Tata Steel Ltd CEO & MD, TV Narendran
Eighty years ago, it was a chewing-gum manufacturer that gave women’s professional sport its first moments in the sun. Now, in an era where women aren’t compelled to take etiquette classes or wear lipstick, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is a big step towards narrowing cricket’s gender gap. In American popular culture, Wrigley’s is to chewing gum what Coke is to ‘soda’ and Ford to the automobile. But Philip K Wrigley, the son of the founder, who ran the company for nearly three decades from 1932, deserves to be remembered for much more than Spearmint or Juicy Fruit. When…
By preparing one dodgy pitch after another, India are only undermining their own batsmen’s confidence, and making their skilled fast bowlers redundant. That defies belief when the team has excelled in all conditions. Make no mistake, this was a hammering. Even the strongest Test sides lose occasionally on home soil, but such has been India’s dominance in their conditions over the past decade and more that any such result leads to banner headlines and intense soul-searching. Perspective is necessary too, since India still lead the series 2-1. But what needs to be stressed here is just how unnecessary this…
Since Jasprit Bumrah’s emergence, Umesh Yadav has seldom been a regular in the Indian team. But whenever he’s called on, Umesh never lets the side down, and his numbers are up there with the greatest to have played the game. Over the past half decade and more, as India have established themselves as a ruthless Test side on home turf, and a highly competent one away, a clutch of individuals have come to the fore. The batting of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and the now-discraded Ajinkya Rahane has won many plaudits, as have the…
After a tricky first day, team India bounced back on Day 2, thanks to the bowlers! 3 wickets each for Ashwin and Umesh Yadav today! At lunch, without any loss, India trail by 75 runs. Atreyo Mukhopadhyay reviews session 1 from the Holker Stadium. #bordergavaskartrophy #indvsaus #testcricket
The “Menace” of Fake/Contaminated Supplements and the Duty of Care on Athletes: A Summary of Shivpal Singh v. NADA
-Vidushpat Singhania In elite sports, conditioning one’s physical tools and sustaining a level of competence is one of the top priorities of athletes around the world. For the purpose of the same, athletes are often found to engage in consumption of supplements that provide them with the relevant needs of their bodies. While consumption of supplements in itself isn’t prohibited in sport, if supplements contain “prohibited substances” as listed in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List and the presence of such prohibited substances are detected in an athlete’s sample, the anti-doping organizations are entitled to impose periods of ineligibility and…
