Mumbai’s captain for the ongoing Buchi Babu Tournament, Ayush Mhatre, revealed the lessons he learned while playing under the leadership of MS Dhoni in the IPL 2025.

Called in as an injury replacement for Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre made an immediate impact with the bat for the franchise while opening the innings. The teenage batting sensation scored 240 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 188.97. As part of one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, Mhatre spent considerable time with Dhoni, who is renowned for nurturing young talent.

Mhatre was quoted by The Hindu as saying, “I’m very lucky to have played with Mahi bhai and to have shared the dressing room with so many great players. What I’ve learned from Mahi bhai is that, in any situation, I must stay calm and make good decisions. He’s not aggressive on the field but makes very smart choices. I try to apply those things when I play.”

He added, “Taking on responsibility has improved my game, and my involvement on the field has increased. As a captain, you have to be alert in every situation.”

Proud to captain Mumbai: Mhatre

Despite the presence of experienced players such as Sarfaraz Khan and Hardik Tamore, Mhatre was appointed captain for the Buchi Babu Tournament in Chennai.

“I’m very proud to captain the Mumbai team. It’s a very special honour for me, and I feel fortunate to be leading Mumbai at such a young age,” he said.

Reflecting on how the role has enhanced his game, he added, “The sense of responsibility has definitely grown. I’m more engaged in every aspect of the game now—being captain means staying alert and aware at all times.”
