Ayush Shetty Stuns Naraoka, sets up all-Indian clash with Lakshya Sen in last eight

Indian men’s shuttlers had a stellar run at the Day 3 of the Hong Kong Open 2025 (S500), with three wins to their bag.

The men’s doubles, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty edged past Thai opponents to storm into the quarterfinals. Rising star Ayush Shetty, just 20, pulled off the biggest win of his career by toppling former World No. 2 Kodai Naraoka with his sharp footwork and impressive returns. Also, Lakshya Sen defeated HS Prannoy in an all-Indian clash to book his spot in quarterfinals.

Day 3 started for India with Sat-Chi winning the Round of 16 match and moving into the quarterfinals. The Indian  pair smashed past Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul 18-21, 21-15, 21-11.

In the men’s singles, in an all-Indian clash at the pre-quarterfinals, Lakshya edged past his compatriot Prannoy to move into the last eight. 

The first game saw Prannoy racing to a 7-3 lead and at the interval with an 11-8 advantage. After the break, he maintained his momentum and won the opening game 21-15.

At the start of the second game, Prannoy took a 4-0 lead, but from there the game remained evenly poised with both Indian shuttlers battling hard. At 18-18 Lakshya surged ahead with four consecutive points to win the second game.

In the decider, Lakshya outplayed Prannoy with impressive footwork and good deception, securing it 21-10.

The next men’s singles saw India’s rising star Ayush taking on 5th seeded and former world number two Naraoka in the Round of 16 clash. He won the match 21-19, 12-21, 21-14.
