Pakistan white-ball head coach Mike Hesson is pleased with the way Babar Azam has returned and performed since his comeback to the white-ball fold. Even though the former captain did not score big runs in the series, Hesson sees a silver lining.

Babar endured a tough time in the ODI series against South Africa, scoring just 45 runs at a modest average of 15 and a strike rate of 78.94. In the T20I series prior to that, he also managed only one half-century in three games.

The premier right-handed batter was unable to convert his starts into a substantial score. Hesson highlighted the positives he saw in Babar’s batting and remains confident that a big innings from him is just around the corner.

“Oh, look, I’ve been really pleased with the way he played in the Test series,” he said while speaking to Ramiz Raja and Zainab Abbas after the ODI series against South Africa, which Pakistan won. “I know he didn’t get big scores, but the way he was moving, striking the ball and finding the gaps — he’s really playing nicely at the moment. He played well in that T20 and got a couple of good starts here where he looked in touch. He’d be as frustrated as anyone, but I don’t mind one or two heading to Rawalpindi in search of big runs. I’m pretty happy with that, and I think Babar will certainly be one of those.”

Next, Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series, which begins on 11 November at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Babar will be looking to end his century drought in that series.
