Pakistan batter Babar Azam made history on Friday during the second T20I match against South Africa. The former captain became the highest run-scorer in men’s T20 internationals, reaching this milestone during Pakistan’s nine-wicket win at his home ground in Lahore.

Babar surpassed India’s Rohit Sharma, who previously held the top spot with 4,231 runs. Before the start of the match, the right-handed batter was only nine runs away from breaking the record. What makes this feat even more impressive is that Babar achieved it in just 123 innings, whereas Rohit took 151 innings to reach his total.

With this achievement, Babar has now moved to the top of the T20I run chart with 4,234 runs. He also has 36 half-centuries and three centuries in this format.

In the second T20I, South Africa posted a modest total of 110 runs, which Pakistan chased down comfortably in 14 overs. Saim Ayub scored 71 runs and Sahibzada Farhan contributed 28, while Babar remained unbeaten on 11. Earlier, Pakistan’s bowlers performed exceptionally well to dismiss the Proteas cheaply, with Faheem Ashraf taking four wickets and Salman Mirza claiming three.

Among active players, England’s Jos Buttler is the closest to Babar with 3,869 runs. India’s Virat Kohli is third on the all-time list with 4,188 runs, although he has retired from this format.
