West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 16 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series in Chattogram, thanks to Shai Hope and Rovman Powell’s brilliant batting and tight bowling by their bowlers.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first. They had a good start as the openers Alick Athanaze and Brandon King put on 59 runs for the first wicket. Then Hope and Powell stitched a partnership of 83 runs off 46 balls that not only provided stability to the innings but was instrumental in taking their team to 165/3 in their 20 overs.

Hope was the highest run getter, scoring 46 off 28 balls at a strike rate of 164.29. In contrast, Powell scored 44, including four sixes. For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed took 2/36 in his four overs.

In reply, Bangladesh lost four wickets within the power play. Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Nasum Ahmed added 40 runs, and that was the only notable partnership in the whole chase. The Caribbean bowlers maintained the pressure throughout the innings. Jayden Seales and Jason Holder took three wickets each while Akeal Hosein was miserly with 2/22 at an economy rate of 5.50.

Powell was adjudged the Player of the Match. With this win, West Indies take a 1-0 lead in the series. The second match will be played on October 29.
