West Indies made history on Tuesday by becoming the first team to bowl all 50 overs using spin in the ongoing third ODI against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka.
The visitors relied entirely on their spin bowlers on a dry and cracked pitch that offered plenty of turn. The never-before-seen tactic from the Men in Maroon proved effective, as Bangladesh were restricted to 213 for 7.
Five spinners shared the workload equally, each bowling 10 overs. Gudakesh Motie was the most effective, taking three wickets for 65 runs. Akeal Hosein and Alick Athanaze claimed two wickets each, while Roston Chase and Khary Pierre kept things tight, helping the team set a world record by surpassing Sri Lanka’s previous mark of 44 overs of spin in a 2004 ODI.
Bangladesh struggled against the relentless spin attack. Soumya Sarkar was the top scorer with 45 runs off 89 balls, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to stabilise the innings with an unbeaten 32, but was left stranded. Rishad Hossain’s quickfire 39 from just 14 balls – including three sixes and three fours – gave the hosts a much-needed late push, helping them cross the 200-run mark.
Having lost the opening match of the series, this game became a series decider for the visitors. After the second ODI, the third and final ODI will be played at the same venue on October 23.
