Bangladesh’s first major ICC trophy win came in 2020 when they beat India in the final of the U19 World Cup in South Africa. Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon played key roles in that campaign, and senior men’s team assistant head coach Mohammad Salahuddin backs the duo to succeed at the top of the order as Bangladesh look to settle their batting lineup ahead of the Asia Cup.

Both Emon and Tanzid are part of the preliminary squad for the Asia Cup, which will be trimmed in a few days’ time. Although competition is stiff, with Mohammad Naim and skipper Litton Das among the other opening options, Salahuddin has hinted that the team could opt for Emon and Tanzid.

“Emon and Tamim have been playing together since the under-19s. Most importantly, they have tasted winning a World Cup. So, they can play fearless cricket; they can play shots. The courage and strokeplay needed at under-19 level are present in them,” he said.

While the team management understands they lack experience, with Tanzid having played 29 T20Is and Emon 17, they also see that the left-handed duo are evolving with time.

“Maybe they are not mature enough yet. Their understanding is increasing, and it is visible. I think, after some time, they themselves will understand what should be done. They wil        l develop it, including the technical aspects. Their game awareness, handling of situations, and mutual understanding have been growing,” he said. “If they play well, that will be good for the team. They are both dominant characters with strong attitudes, which is very important at this level of cricket. If they can develop a better mutual understanding, we will have a strong opening partnership in the future,” he added.

Bangladesh will play a three-match T20I series at home against the Netherlands before the Asia Cup, which begins on 9 September. The Litton Das-led team will be looking to strike the right balance in this series before heading to the UAE for the continental tournament.
